The DigiLit course was a refresher for me. It taught me practical skills like using Excel for organizing data and working with AI tools for various tasks. One of the most helpful parts of the course was learning effective Google search techniques—it's amazing how much more efficient I can be now when finding information.
I enjoyed the excel part of the course. I never wanted to learn excel but this course made me so intrique about the excel and advance formulas that I actually started using excel as a tool in my day to day life. The session given by Prof. Kaushik and other was so amazing within 1.5 hour of session I ended up knowing how AI works and it processes data.
I had never worked much with Excel before the class, but it ultimately
proved to be one of the most valuable skills I learned. We started with
pretty basic stuff involving entering data and formatting cells and
advanced functions. The learning of the formulas for SUM, AVERAGE,
VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, COUNTIF, and IF statements really made work pretty
easy. For example, I can now use VLOOKUP to quickly find information in
large datasets and IF statements to automate decision-making within a
spreadsheet. It has already been of great use in organizing and
analyzing data better for my academic work.
Well, aside from the advent of using Excel, my mentor also instilled in
me the proper etiquette in composing emails. I never really thought much
about it before, but now I understand how to write formally with an
appropriate structure-a proper subject heading, greeting, main body
text, and the appropriate statement to close an email. Instead of just
writing something like "Hey, send me the report", I now realize why
writing more formally and correctly is significant.
Another useful thing I learned in this course was how to use Google
Advanced Search to find relevant information more efficiently. I
discovered how to use search operators like filetype:pdf to filter
search results and find documents, research papers, and textbooks
quickly. For example, if I’m looking for an economics textbook in PDF
format, I can simply search for: "Macroeconomics textbook filetype:pdf"
This saves me so much time from scrolling through many web pages. I also
learned how to use quotation marks (\" \") to find an exact phrase and
site:edu to get information from educational institutions. These search
techniques have really helped me in finding study materials and
resources from reliable sources.
Overall, this course gave me practical skills that I can use daily.
Excel helped me enhance my data-handling abilities, learning email
etiquette made me more confident in professional communication, and
Google Advanced Search made my research much more efficient. These
skills will surely help me a long way down the line, whether it's in
academics, doing internships, or eventually a job role.
